Warning against harmful smuggled seedlings
VAWA - The trading and cultivation of forestry plant varieties without testing, evaluation, and permission from competent authorities is a violation of the law, posing many unpredictable consequences.

Recently, in some localities, many people have been offering "Hainan Kynam" seedlings for sale with very attractive advertisements such as the tree of fortune, agarwood-producing tree, 1 hectare can yield tens of billions of VND after 6-7 years of planting, etc. On forums, associations, and groups on social media platforms, many discussions have also appeared regarding the planting, investment, and advertisements for this type of tree with prices ranging from 150,000 to 500,000 VND per tree, with commitments that each tree can yield from several million to tens of millions of VND. Some seedling nursery owners are even willing to sign contracts, committing to product buy-back when the trees reach harvest standards, and guaranteeing 100% agarwood production after 6-7 years...

According to the Vietnam Agarwood Association, the Hainan Kynam varieties being advertised and sold are grafted from Aquilaria species in China, do not yet have a scientific name, and are smuggled into Vietnam. The advertising information on social media has not yet been verified by authorities, which may lead to misunderstandings and misconceptions about the value of agarwood obtained from this tree.
On June 8, the Economic Police Department of Vĩnh Phúc Provincial Police (now Phú Thọ) initiated a criminal case and prosecuted four individuals for smuggling 5,000 Aquilaria trees from China to Vietnam through unofficial channels. However, for profit, many individuals still disregard legal regulations, buying, selling, transporting, and smuggling plant varieties that have not been licensed by the authorities.

Faced with the increasing smuggling, trading, and cultivation of Hainan Kynam seedlings, which threatens biodiversity, forest ecosystem safety, and the rights of the people, on September 16, the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) issued an official dispatch requesting localities to inspect and review all organizations and individuals involved in the production, business, storage, and use of forestry plant varieties in their areas, ensuring that forestry plant varieties must have legal origins and meet quality standards as prescribed.
